We are finally doing it and moving to Phoenix. We both got transfers and ready to plan our commute. She will be working in Goodyear, I will be on e broadway right where I-10 heads south. We have a middle schooler and we found a great school in Litchfield. I have to be at work at 8 everyday, what time should I leave. I am going to assume the 5 o'clock traffic heading east is just plain misery for an hour.

By "where it heads south" you mean over around 48th St? That's a long drive, if it is. The traffic coming into town from the west in the morning is no picnic... at 5 PM, you are going to be heading west, not east, but the time you get home isn't as fixed as the time you have to get to work. Mapquest says 34 to 43 minutes, but that's not rush hour estimate, when it could easily be double that. If you use I-10, once you get past downtown, then you are in a reverse commute, it will go faster.

Yes, it is over by 48th street and yes, heading west in the evening. Can anyone suggest an area that will work. She will be working at the 7575 west lower buckeye. We will be doing the apartment thing for six months before we decide where we want to purchase a house. A great middle and high school is the major driver for our decisions.

First couple times I would try leaving at 630 then you might be able to stretch it to Leave by 7. Just get on the freeway. Traffic turns to stop and go at about 83rd Ave going east and stays that way to about the tunnel downtown, where it will clear up pretty much the rest of the way.

You could consider Ahwatukee (Phoenix south of Elliot) area or Tempe. That would make it a lot easier for you, and put the commute on your wife. There's places much closer in the Laveen area but the schools are not the best. Arizona has open enrollment so you can take your kids into another district/schools in many cases. Problem with that is that extra curricular activities and friends become a commute then, too.
