Hi all,

We are sorting out a swimming pool to be built in our new house in Gilbert.

We would like to have a heated pool so that we are able to swim most of the year around.

So far we keep getting a variety of views with no consistency as to what is the best option.

So if you have experience of owning a heated pool, could you please express your view....Gas or Electric or Solar?

Many thanks,
James

The desire to swim year round is something that people from other places dream about when contemplating a move to AZ. I strongly recommend you get a spa built into your pool for winter use, and use GAS to heat it. There will be a valving arrangement that lets you put heated water into the pool if you want. Seasonal visitors may want to size to heat the entire pool more quickly, but I would still have a spa.

Gas is the only way to go. Solar is a distant second. Electric is OK for a stand alone spa but would be very slow to heat and outrageously expensive for a in ground pool which is a massive heat sink.

Have you inquired as to how much it is going to cost you to heat a pool "year round"? I was told it could be $300+/month in the winter. We don't have a heater so I don't have first hand knowledge but that is what we were told when we built ours. I would recommend the hot tub route as Ponderosa mentioned. Swimming isn't appealing in the winter when it is cool/cold out and I'm glad we don't have a heated pool. I do wish we would have put in a hot tub with our pool as that is appealing when it is cold out.

We have a gas heater but have never turned it on. I would be interested to know how much it would cost us to fire it up.

Gas. As much as I would love to endorse solar my neighbors with it had leaking all the time, wasn't a good deal. Their roof was shot but maybe it was just the kind they had. As others said electric would be pricey I think. If you can afford it heating a pool would be great, our weather lends itself to that beautifully. 75 degrees with full sun and a heated pool would be bliss to me.

get a heat pump we heat our pool all winter keep it at 90 degrees work great except when the temps stay low it needs to be at least 50 degrees to work but we only had trouble last year in the 2 very cold snaps , it runs app. $200.00 to heat in dec ,Jan . my neighbors has a heat pump also different brand and his results are the same as mine we have 12,000 gallon pool .

Hi , I would like to not heat one pool year round, but add 1/2 mo on each end. Also when the pool is open to help keep it warmer.
Thanks Buckeye

Maybe research solar blankets, but I wouldn't recommend one if you have in-floor cleaning.

What's a ballpark figure for heating up a pool in the winter months? Anyone know?

My Dec 26-Jan 26 was $399.93.
We keep the pool at 78 when not is use and bump it up to 87 about 10 times a month w/ a 400,000 btu natural gas heater. We place the pool blanket every night and it drops about 4 degrees on average depending on the overnight temps.
This includes heating the home...
It's fun hanging out by the waterfall where the hot water comes out from...
