I'm planning on moving back to Phoenix next year, and I have tunnel-vision on where I want to live, in an older. circa 1960's, townhouse complex in Central Phoenix, hopefully walking distance to the light rail line.

I was looking at a RE site last week, and the vast majority of the townhouses have no garages, only carports. I live in an older townhouse complex in Las Vegas and I don't know of an older, or newer, townhouse complex in this city without a spacious garage. My current garage is big enough for 3 small cars.

Why carports, and not garages in Phoenix townhouses? A search in Tucson wasn't much different.

Carports were the norm here until the mid 80's. The carport was a place to park your car. Storage or security was not an issue.

Some older homes had their carports converted to garages, but be careful. Make sure they meet all the zoning requirements or you may have issues down the road.
