We're buying our first home and want to have a pool. We have two small children and won't do it without a fence around said pool.

Two Questions:

1. What is a reasonable price to have a professional put in a MESH fence for us?

2. Is it reasonable to demand a fence be put up by the previous owners as part of the negotiation?

Thanks.

Here's another thread or two on the issue:

A Google search turns up several companies who will do free estimates for you. I'm not sure about "demanding" anything from the seller re: the fence. It's not as if they are required by anyone (other than you, in your demand) to put the fence in. It would depend, too, on any other things you'd like to put on the table to negotiate. If you want the house badly enough, I would not let a mesh fence be a deal breaker.

Well you can't "demand" anything. However you can negotiate it. They may or may not pay for one.

If your children are under 6, the law requires the fence to be installed prior to move in. You should have received a pool disclosure and safety pamphlet.

I just got a few quotes on this and they were all for between $700-$1000, but of course it depends upon much fencing you need. If you want the self-closing gate that adds b/t $200-300.

The self-closing gate may be a requirement to pass inspection.

OP: Make sure you check with your town/county for a list of current pool ordinances. It would stink to have a fence installed, only to find it doesn't meet code. I did a very quick search and found this, just to give you some idea.
