Have you looked into the bucks county area? Yardley is a 30 min commute on the train from center city, doesnt have horrible taxes, has great schools, and a great community feel.

I would recomend Middletown. Its in Delaware County, and with a train ride, it would only take about a half hour. The home prices are around your budget for a 4 bedroom, and it has a great school district. Most of my friends that have graduated college with a teaching degree had little to no trouble finding a job. Taxes are also lower there then they are in Bucks County. You are also about a half hour away from the King of Prussia mall, which is one of the largest malls around this area.

I have no idea whether it's easier or not, but several people I went to school with from LI ended up staying in Virginia to teach after college. The schools in Stafford or Spotsylvania seem to be hiring a lot.

I feel like a bit of a double agent but the population explosion in Northern Virginia has created a great number of teaching jobs. I don't know specifically about history, however. You may find that Fairfax and Loudoun counties have the most (and best compensating) opportunities but you may indeed find yourself living in Stafford or Spotsy. Those latter counties have become exurban outposts for families looking for affordable housing so I agree with juniperbleu that there may be options out there as well.
