It's fabulous. Even if only part of it happens it will be spectacular.

Always good to see this.

And this is from last month, but great to see the New York Times write a nice article highlighting Philadelphia, without a single mention of blue collar (to me that is exciting). The Washington Post always like to throw around backhanded compliments whenever they write about Philadelphia, but the Times did a much better job of showcasing some of what the city has to offer.

The NY Times has been pretty good at writing positive things about Philly for a while.

I personally like all the bridges that attach the railyard neighborhood to the rest of the city.

You were working at Penn before I was, but when I was in University Relations, working with the Government and Community Relations folks, Blackwell was carrying Penn's water. This was after Judith Rodin became President, though.

Fry got knocked about a bit by the staff, especially all the employees upset at his clearing out the food trucks around the lot that became the Inn at Penn. (He still doesn't much care for food trucks, from what I hear, but tolerates them in Drexel's residential precinct because the students use them a lot.) But I think he learned a lot of valuable lessons at Penn, especially about the ways universities can stimulate redevelopment around their campuses, and he's applied them everywhere he's gone since.

I heard from someone at Thursday morning's formal announcement that the redevelopment projects he launched around the Franklin & Marshall campus are beginning to pay off.

I haven't weighed in on the renderings, as everything presented at the announcement is purely conceptual. What you're looking at upthread is what might be, not necessarily what will be, except to note that what will be will contain the square footage outlined in the press materials and articles you've read. But I did weigh in on the likelihood of its completion:

Our Odds for the 30th Street Station Area Development Plan | Property

By the way, that's what they're calling it. It's not at the stage where they're going to give the new neighborhood a name. Fry did say, however, that the previously announced Schuylkill Yards development to the west of the station is a "down payment" on this project.

Oh no, those tall buildings, in a city, think of the children!!!!!

Seriously though, the video sure makes it look like a great plan. I agree with Blackwell: "We can't wait 35 years," though I can't help but wonder what she demanded to be paid to say that and come out in support of this project.

I can probably believe that about Blackwell, and Penn, during the Hackney Era. Of course, Fry, not coming from academia orginally, was a big part of the friction, at Penn, early on. He's obviously learned a lot and that's commendable.

Kinda what I inferred above. What "carrot" is she getting out of this?

Additionally, who in the future, will carry the ball on this project since some of the current players will be dead long before it's completed? And how much is the viability of Amtrak needed to go forward?
