NEW YORK, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Pet store operators and humane society workers in New York both say giving pets as a gift on Valentine's Day is not always the right call.
The New York Daily News said Saturday Puppy Paradise store manager Mike Rubin recalled one instance in which a customer at his New York store made the ill-advised decision to purchase a puppy for his love interest.
I'm going to add that pets as any kind of holiday or birthday gift aren't always a good idea. I've seen too many cases where the pet was ignored or had to be given away. Sometimes people don't think things through and it's the animals that suffer.

Ditto for me as well. I have two rabbits that I adopted after the "Easter dump" that happens every year about a month after Easter. They are great pets, but not perfect for everyone by any means. If only people looked into what it takes to care for animals and made sure the people to whim they are being given actually wants them!
Saw the thread title here, John 1960, and got tickled. It brings to mind the time my two sisters thought it a great idea to get my Mother a little dog for Christmas. The dog walked into the living room, took one look at Mother, snarled and growled, and walked out.
Smart dog.
Pets do NOT make good gifts. My Jack Russell is a good example. He ended up at the Humane Society because he was notMY DOG, Skip for the little boy to whom the puppy was given. You have to wonder what folks have in mind when they choose an animal for a special occasion, even if the recipient has expressed an interest, or desire, to have said animal.
