I see your car is almost paid off, but ..

Do you need a car?
What the car worth?
What are the monthly carrying costs for the Car. Insurance? etc...
Could you use a ZipCar (or Similar car) when you need a car?
Can you rent a car if you need a car for long trips?
Is mass transit a option to get to the airport? Maybe CarService for airport trips?

Yes. A car is still a must. I will use it to visit family and friends.

The monthly costs aren't that much. Insurance is $55 and once I live close to work I doubt I'd spend even $30 a month on gas.

How much would you save on gas and utilities if you went with the more expensive place?

So the apt is $100 a month over budget, but you are saving $100 a month on gas (plus wear on your car). At worst, it appears that you will be breaking even. See if you can negotiate a lower car insurance rate since you won't be driving to work everyday. As long as it is a decent neighborhood, to me, a 5 minute walk to work is huge; you have just added two hours of personal time to each work day. That has to be worth something.

It's still too expensive but I think you should take it. It not only saves you on gas, but wear and tear on your car (which can end up being the bigger savings if you hold onto your car longer). You'll also have a much better quality of life. Maybe you'll have time to work a side gig with the time you save.

I don't want a roommate.

The two-bedroom apartments in the area run about $1500-1800 anyway. I'd only be saving $100 a month or so.
