You posted this same question on the Business Finance forum a day earlier than here -- and got a lot of replies. Did you not like any of them?

Since you asked, I have never posted in the BFI forum before. There are 5 replies in the other thread (including mine) - not "a lot" to me, but perhaps so in your perspective? After that first post, I looked more thoroughly at the forum and thought this would be the more appropriate sub-forum for this question. Given I have gotten more than twice the responses to this thread, I feel I was correct.

If you are a mod and wish to close the other thread, I have no issue with that. If you are just policing the threads, however, I also have no issue if you request my first thread be locked.

I wasnt trying to mod your posts ... and, despite my question, I dont really care how many times you post the question. I've just seen many cases where people dont like the answers they get in one forum so they ask the same question in another forum. I've always been curious about that and decided to ask why this time.

A Tax Court case that may be somewhat on point is Chiu v. Commissioner, T.C. Memo 1997-199. In that case the taxpayer presented evidence (through canceled checks) that he paid some of the mortgage payments on a jointly-owned house during the year. The court only allowed him to deduct an interest amount based on the number of checks written to pay the mortgage during the year.

So if you want to try to arbitrarily shift the deduction around, just be aware that under the rationale in the Chiu case, you might be shot down without a reasonable basis for shifting the deduction.
