SOUTH LYON, Mich., April 3 (UPI) -- Some parents are calling for a Michigan teen dance club to be shut down after it hosted a bikini contest for girls as young as 16.

Police said Primal the Club of South Lyon did not violate any laws with the March 28 contest, which offered $500 in prizes, and city officials said club owners have tossed plans for similar contests in the future, the Detroit Free Press reported Friday.

Brrr, there's probably still snow on the ground in Michigan. What are they thinking?

What were the ages on the teen dance club?

I grew up in Texas, and most of the teen dance clubs there were strictly for those 17-19 (you could get in at age 16 though if you had parental permission). The clubs there had swimsuit contests as well (especially for major holidays) and I see nothing wrong with it.

If they're talking about kids like 13, 14, 15, an maybe 16..then I absolutely think that's too young. However once you start getting closer to 18, I see nothing wrong with it.

the physical difference between a 16 yr old and an 18 yr old is minimal. In some parts of the world, 16 is a legal adult. I see what your saying, but its basically a beauty contest (like Ms Teen USA), except you see more skin. You can go to the beach and see the same thing, yet no one cares about that.

I would worry about it more if it was nudity or sex. But a girl in a swimsuit is pretty tame nowadays.

Kind of a moral gray area. I dont think teens under 16 need any more inducement to act/dress provocatively. Wearing a bikini on the beach is one thing (allegedly) for comfort and getting some sun exposure. Wearing in a club is (solely) to get gawked at.

I may have my personal moral standards but I am not going to impose them on others. Morality starts at home. If the law says 16 is OK in that area, then all the parents need to do is not allow their children in those clubs.

If the parents want to have the club shut down, have a referendum, have it passed and then it is OK, that is democracy. Maybe they can call their legislator and let them know they won't vote for them the next time around, that's democracy.

However, when parents try to shut down a business because they don't provide the required supervision and control on their children, I think they want to pass down parental rights to the government.

I would hope those parents that do not mind their children attend the existence of the club to also demonstrate and if the outnumber the other paretns, then good for them.

You have a great day.
