Family dog kills 2-week-old Ariz. girl - Life- msnbc.com

Dogs aren't always protective.

The father was at work (police officer).

The mother left the room for only a moment.

The dog chewed on the infant's head.

Earlier this year in Tulsa there was a case where a 6 week old Lab pup supposedly mauled an infant that was 2 months old. Eventually it came out that Dad and Granddad got baby up and put them in a swing and Mom and Grandma were still sleeping in the other end of the house. No one actually knows how long the baby was left alone or what happened.
The puppy was immediately euthanized by family request and TPD to analyze the contents of its stomach for the autopsy. The MOTHER has a history of drug abuse and already had been investigated for neglecting the baby. I saw this puppy when they showed it on the news. HE WAS TINY. OK maybe not Tiny but.... the length of my elbow to my hand. Maybe a foot and a half long. How in the world did it get up into a baby swing and manage to maul it to death? Geez.

UPDATE 11/04/08: Linzy Earles, who turned 18 last month, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter in a juvenile court in connection with the death of her baby. The Tulsa police affidavit states Zane "was left unattended in an infant swing on the opposite side of the house for approximately two hours." In this time, the family's puppy "that was left loose in the house ate the two-month-old victim."

Don't ever leave a baby unattended even with the smallest pet. It can be quite dangerous.

That is heartbreaking. I believe my dog loves my girls to pieces, but I never, ever leave the baby alone where the dog can get to her. It's just not worth the risk or having to live with, "But it was just for a minute" for the rest of my life.
