My last year of teaching I was pregnant - 9 months by the end of the school year. On my last day, a lot of my students cornered me in my classroom to "surprise" me with a baby shower. A group of the students organized it. I am not going to lie - I appreciated their thoughts but I was uncomfortable both physically and emotionally. I had to sit for 2 hours with students and open gifts. It was very strange. Some of the gifts were very expensive. And because it was high school, I felt it was inappropriate because I hadn't submitted grades in yet. I don't know....
Dunno- maybe they overheard someone talking, or saw the engagement announcement in the newspaper.

I guess I'm in the minority here....I just don't get gifting teachers, at least with something more than a nice note. They are paid for their work, and if it's not as much as they'd like, well....they knew the pay scale when they applied for the job. To me, it's like giving a gift to the mailman...he's a quasi-government employee, for heaven's sake, with a very good pay scale. And why do people want to tip the newspaper carrier?

Sigh....ok, I'm finished ranting now.

You need to recount, I don't think any of us "expect" gifts. Most of us, however, expect the kids to have basics like pencils.

When my son was young..I was a single mom and just getting by....the end of the year I found her a cute little gift. .nothing expensive. .it may have been a stuffed animal... I ran into her years later as she was paying a parking ticket where I worked. ..it had to be 10 yrs later
..he was in elementary school when he gave the gift.. and he was in college at the time I saw her... ...she still HAD THE gift and told me she thought of him when she looked at it...made me smile. ...this was in the early 90s...she didn't expect much...

Yeah, I got an email a couple days ago from a kid who graduated in 1999. Just, in her words, thanking me for the things I did when she was in my class.

My oldest started Kindergarten in 1987 and I have had kids in school every year since then. I can remember a request for donations towards a class gift for Christmas or end of the year maybe a total of 5 times at the most.

Many years there is a printout sent home or available online for a teacher's wish list or personal favorites so that those who wish to gift them something during the year has a starting point for something that will be used. It has never been an expectation that you must give numerous gifts or even one.

Teacher Appreciation week is done with suggestions, however it's not for expensive personal gifts. Instead it is something like on Monday bring a written thank you , Tues a flower from your garden, Wed a pencil for the class, Thurs a poem the student wrote, Fri wear their favorite color. There usually is a luncheon provided by the PTA and their volunteers that week as well. Anything above and beyond that is up to the parents.

There has never been a request for anything like a baby shower, wedding or birthday. If a PTA is providing anything towards those they are doing so against the national bylaws as it is strictly forbidden.

Now, regarding being asked for a contribution for someone like a Band Director, Coach or a sponsor, then I would gladly donate something as these type jobs don't get enough extra pay to cover their extra effort/hours they put into those jobs.

I would also be curious of any of the teachers feel uncomfortable sharing that, for exactly the reasons you and others have cited.
It's the PTA.
