Public shaming is just bad parenting, IMO.

I see no problem with it. So a child was shamed--big deal. And yes, I say that even with the one having committed suicide. Suicide is a weak and chickening out path some people take who can't suck up a little adversity and who don't care about the pain it causes to their family and friends.

I'm sorry, but I can't adopt the post Robin Williams mentality that's infected this country with respect to suicide. Prior to his passing, you'd hear plenty of people saying that suicide was a weak response from someone who couldn't man up or woman up to the problems we all deal with in life and I think they were right in saying it.

If kids don't want to be embarrassed, then they should do as they're told 24/7 in every single thing. You as a child have no right to gripe about being embarrassed when you behave in an embarrassing way. You brought it on yourself. Your parents' words are LAW.

No I've not done any of this myself, and I do agree that one shouldn't keep dragging punishment out, deal with it and move on . However I do think sometimes in more extreme situations it has to be dramatic and memorable to work, and if it takes a little embarrassment to do so, then so be it.

Exactly. Is that something they want future college admissions staff to see? Or future employers?

I don't believe shaming or humiliating is healthy. It's one thing for a person to FEEL ashamed or regretful of an act they committed (as part of the learning and maturing process), but something else entirely for another person to try to heap shame upon the wrongdoer.

I wouldn't do it. What happens in my home with my family isn't anyone else's business.

My mom wasn't social media savvy so she stuck to chastising me in front of large groups, I blame her for my anxiety.
