If it's not against the school rules I think it's ok. One kid at my daughter's middle school made and sold duct tape wallets. My daughter bought one and still uses it. Let's hear it for entrpreneurs!
Would you allow your kid to do "business" at school, such as buying candy in bulk and selling it to other kids at profit? Some of my son's friends are doing it and now he wants to do the same.
I'd rather have them sitting in front of the TV eating potato chips during their free time.
Seriously, It wouldn't be my preference, I'd rather they spend their spare time getting exercise or learning something but who is to say this isn't learning something? Learning business basics, salesmanship?
Would be a little concerned about them buying $100 worth of candy, and giving up after selling $8 worth at which point we're stuck with all that candy.
Thanks for all the input! As far as I know, the school policy does not say anything about it. Actually, I very much like the idea of physical labor, for many reasons. Too bad that there are not so many opportunities for lawn mowing or shoveling snow in Manhattan. Luckily, he hasn't mentioned this business idea again, seems that he has already moved on to new ideas.

I think that there is a big difference between someone making and selling a few craft items to friends than bringing in a huge bag of bootleg candy or soda everyday.

when I was a boy over 40 years ago there was this one delinquent that stole candy from the local convenience store and sold it to kids at school....it was easy for him because we didn't have any door scanners or survelleince equipment doo-dads.....we always wondered how he managed to afford all these toys and expensive coats and what not....until the constable came and arrested him in front of the whole class for shoplifting......

I'm not sure what the difference is, other than the school would probably outlaw it because of nutrition guidelines. I agree that it "feels" different, but I can't really describe how it is different.
