Popular group for childrens books
^within that group there are different discussions, I saw one for book recommendations for a 6th grade reading level, I even saw one that said "Biographies for pre-teens" so it seems like there's some good content in that group.
The children's genre
^this link just shows new releases, most read, and overall most popular.
How about Captain Underpants? It's a little young but my 3rd grader and 6th grader both love those books. The Artemis Fowl series is great too.
I've noticed a big difference in what my oldest was willing to read when she was in 4th grade and now...she would only read comic books or books with lots of pictures. Now she's reading regular books, and she actually finishes them in a day or two.
HH Mom - thanks for this post. My 4th grade DD currently has very little interest in chapter books and loves comics, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and other picture-heavy books. Thanks for giving me hope that this may not be a life-long preference.
He probably wouldn't get all the references in these books, but I think they would work well for a nine-year-old with a higher reading level. It's a series of books, and the first one is "The White Mountains" by John Christopher. (There is actually one "before" it but it's meant to be read last.)
Check if your library has a "Mock Newbery" club. If not, you can find one online. They're groups that discuss potential Newbery award winners for the year. They read books that have come out in the current year and discuss them. My son is in 5th grade and just started attending last year. It's great to hear the kids talking about characters and plot..they get pretty passionate!!
If he likes animal books, especially those that are written from the animals' perpectives, try the Warrior Cats or Seeker Bears series.
Not sure whether it's too young for him, but my son read all the Magic Tree House books in 2nd-3rd grade.
And because it cannot be said enough, Harry Potter..it took us forever to get through all of them, but I am a huge fan.
