All of our kids would pick one of the local restaurants we frequent that offer kids' menus. In fact, they make it very clear that they want to go out to dinner for their birthday.

I had a birthday party with kids every year but as a family we would go to this fancy restaurant. I understand not all kids would like it but I did cause it was special since it was only for birthdays and I felt older I guess.
I am not sure if this is just where I am from but growing up I remember non family chain restaurants having arcade games in the waiting area. That made it more kid friendly. I also remember at Max and Ermas they had a bath tub that was an ice cream bar. Little things like that to me would make kids want to eat there.

When I was in second grade (so about age 8-ish) I probably would have picked Italian food. My 17 yo sister probably wanted Italian too at that age, though just usually just got buttered noodles (yeah, she was that kid). My 14 yo brother is adventurous and would've wanted sushi, it's still his favorite. My 10 yo sister would have skipped dinner and gone straight to the chocolate. And, my 6 yo sister is currently a huge fan of fried chicken so maybe KFC for her in the future. My parents would usually take us out for our birthdays or fix our favorite meal at home. Then over the next weekend we'd have a family cookout of some sort.

A place that had pizza and was surrounded by roller coasters.
