This is our second time staying in hospital in two weeks already. She keeps vomiting and has a low fever with a little diaraar. We have done all kind of tests, blood, poop, pee, ultra sound, x-ray... But all are normal. So what could be the problem? Growing new teeth?

What does the doctor say? If she's in the hospital, s/he (doc) must think it's serious.

She vomitted some bile last night, so the doctors start getting serious. They admitted us to the hospital and persuaded us to do a x-ray. But the result is negative.

How old is your daughter? Is she acting like she is in pain?

Has she been tested for celiac disease? If it's recurrent, it's possible it could be gluten intolerance.

My 10 year old son recently had a similar thing - 5 incidents of fever and vomiting in 9 weeks, each one lasting about 36 hours. Like you, we did all the blood, stool and pee tests, but all came back clear. Drove us nuts. The last time was the beginning of April, and we've been clear since then, so fingers crossed that it was just a bad run caused by having lowered immunity after a long bout with the flu. We are pretty sure that one of the bouts was norovirus, which is highly congtagious and can be pretty intense. Both his vomit and diarrhea were neon yellow from the bile. Took about 4 days from start to finish. There is a newish strain, Sydney 2012, that has been around in the US since January.

Good luck. It is hard not to worry because recurring fever and vomiting can be a symptom of some fairly serious illnesses, but it's reassuring news that all the tests are coming back negative. Does she seem well otherwise, apart from the episodes of vomiting and fever? How old is she?

Talk to your doctor about celiac disease.
CLASSIC SYMPTOMS MAY INCLUDE
  • Abdominal cramping, intestinal gas
  • Distention and bloating of the stomach
  • Chronic diarrhea or constipation (or both)
  • Steatorrhea – fatty stools
  • Anemia – unexplained, due to folic acid, B12 or iron deficiency (or all)
  • Unexplained weight loss with large appetite or weight gain

She may have food allergies, or as other posters suggested, celiac disease.
Lots of thoughts going your way. I know what it is like to spend time at the hospital with a little one. I hope the doctors will find what is going on soon!

At 6 months of age, this kind of symptoms MUST be treated seriously...they are so tiny and can dehydrate so very quickly. PLEASE ensure that you get the answers you need before you allow her to be discharged from the hospital!

Has shigella been ruled out?
