We have a couple of organised activities (Soccer, tennis, music) but the kids are fairly free to drop in on their friends on the way home or get to our place, drop their school bags and go on. Somehow we seem to not loose them. Mostly. Usually they ring and tell us. They do have to go in a group though. So we do let our youngest 2 (9yo boy and 6 yo girl) walk or ride together to a friends place that includes crossing a largish road.
When my kids were younger the only time they actually had organized "playdates" (I still find that term odd) is when a child didn't live close enough to just go out and play with. There were kids in the neighborhood and honeslty, everyone just went outside and played. They played in our yard or house, or someone else's yard or house, they rode bikes, they went to the park....it was just called "playing"...and it happened all the time.
LOL, I'm with you. I never used the term, and neither did any of the people whose kids my daughter played with.
