The scientific evidence overwhelmingly proves Wakefield lied. He was involved with and paid a large sum of money by lawyers who wanted to sue the makers of the MMR vaccine. Meanwhile, he wanted to patent a measles only vaccine. Wakefield is a charlatan who wanted to get rich.
As to the last sentence, let's use the measles vaccine as an example.
After a full series, the measles vaccine is 99% effective. In the USA, 92% of children are vaccinated. If you are not vaccinated and are exposed to measles, there is a 90% chance you will catch it.
Take a population of 100,000 people. Ninety two percent are vaccinated: 92,000. If those 92, 000 are exposed, 1% catch the measles: 920.
But, 91,080 do not catch measles.
Of the 8,000 who are not vaccinated, 90% catch measles: 7,200. Only 800 do not get sick.
Finally, high vaccination rates produce herd immunity. So many people are immune in the US that there are few susceptible individuals. Outbreaks in the US now are traced to unimmunized individuals who import measles from abroad, where, thanks to Wakefield, vaccination rates dropped.
See here what happens in populations that are not immunized:

From the second link::
" ... in a recent Indiana outbreak, a 17-year-old girl was infected with measles on a trip to Romania, and when she came home she went to a church picnic attended by about 500 people. Of that group, 35 were unvaccinated. Three people out of 465 vaccinated got measles, while 31 out of the 35 who were unvaccinated contracted the disease ,,,"
That's less than 1% of the vaccinated people got sick and 89% of the ones who were not vaccinated did. Q.E.D. And that was at an
outdoor picnic.
