You're kidding me? I grew up in the 60s & 70s and all boys had to shower. If we ran late after PE and tried to sneak into class without showering, we were hauled out of class and forced to shower! It took only one embarrassing moment like that in front of the girls and you never missed a shower again! Girls had the option to shower or not after PE because they didn't have the dirt and smelly sweat problem that boys did. When my 5 sons went through middle & high school, they always showered because I told the that they had to learn the same hygiene responsibilities as I did. Each year, the other boys were at first amazed at my sons' courage. Then some of them began to shower as well. Their coaches were impressed.

After PE class in the late 70's - 80's all of the girls were expected to at least rinse off their arms and legs in the shower. Few ever went into the showers completely naked (most wore panties and bra with a towel). And I don't think anyone got their face/hair wet because there was not enough time to blow dry/style hair and entirely redo makeup. After all, it's only an hour long class....

I suppose sweaty guys could always wear a bathing suit into the shower, too, if privacy is a concern for them..

I was in P.E. classes in the late 60's. The girls showered. Your grade was affected if you didn't. (We must have smelled terrible for them to do that, lol.)

I was in the 50s and 60s and I remember my mother writing a note excusing me from pe because of the modesty issue and I always went to the library . I must have been the most well read kid in the whole school . The coaches were not happy that the principal excused pe but there was nothing they could do since my mother was using the religious card . We were catholics and you simply did not undress in front of girls or boys .

I think they should just get rid of gym class anyway, as a parent I never felt it was necessary anyway, and when i was a child I did not like it.

As a taxpayer, I would rather my sons learn something about something, not play a game they can play in the street.....I just do not agree with gym class.

When I was growing up, we showered at school. We weren't forced. We wanted to shower. Nothing is more gross than not showering after a sweaty workout. My children used the showers too. I know they weren't forced. They never complained about it.

The only thing I remember is that the gym teacher complained that most of the students didn't take their uniforms home for laundry and wore the same stinky thing each week. Not my kids. They might not have brought their gym clothes home each week, but I made darn sure they took a new set with them each week. When they ran out of shorts and t-shirts at home, I'd tell them to clean their locker. They'd come home with a huge bag of laundry. LOL

High school - boys prep school early 1970s - everyone showered after PE and then after sports after school. We actually had a really nice locker room and showers facility. I don't actually remember anyone telling us that we had to shower, but they handed out towels so the expectation was there, and as a new student you just followed what the older guys did.

I was already an experienced communal showerer from swim lessons at the YMCA, but anyone who wasn't used to group showers got used to it pretty quickly. Sports team showers were actually a team bonding experience which, if you never did it, you would not understand.

Showers are not nearly as common today but I do know guys that shower either after PE or after sports.

And I agree with a poster that said schools should still build showers because sometimes they are used in emergency situations. That has happened around here after hurricanes or ice storms. A lot of people have wells and if your power goes out so does your well. The schools open up to provide for showers.

Zombie thread from 2011.

I was in high school in the early 1970s and we all showered every day after PE and after sports. With later budget cuts, schools quit providing towel service so that pretty much ended showering.

At Maui high schools now, few kids shower after PE, but most do after football and wrestling.

I was in HS in the late 70's and no one showered after PE class,

it was only 30 minutes if that, who was sweating that much, LOL.

no one showered after gym class, there wouldn't be enough time.

maybe if there is a tournament or something to that effect, but regular daily gym class, no.
no one did.
