Mr. X and I have a business christmas party. Our neighbors (whom we are good friends with) have kindly stated that they will babysit toddler x. As I am aware the party is from 6pm to 10pm. What do you think is appropriate compensation for it as they stated they didnt want money for it? I always give a thank you card and flowers to anyone who does such a big favor but this is the second time of someone watching Toddler X who is a friend. The first time the friend refuse to accept money and prefered the thank you card and flowers.

I think flowers or a bottle of wine is nice. You could also send a gift card to a restaurant or store you know they like.

Since it is during the holiday season, how about sending them a holiday gift basket afterwards.

Find out if there's any "home-made" dishes they enjoy, that you know you make really well, and make them some. Like - apple pie (hard to go wrong with that), or real tollhouse cookies, or mac & cheese (made with real actual cheese, and a roux, not some jarred cheese sauce crappola).

Do they have children? My friends and I babysit for each other with no money/gifts/flowers changing hands. We don't keep a tally or anything, but it all works out pretty evenly. Sometimes if a friend babysits for me, I will invite the family over dinner or something like that if they have a regular babysitter or if a while has gone by without them taking me up on the offer to return the favor.

If the neighbors don't have kids, though, then I think flowers, a thank you note, or dinner (at your house or at a restaurant) is a good "exchange."

Sorry I was busy cooking dinner and chasing a crazy baby. Thank you all for the suggestions! I will definitely be making them something homemade for the holidays but before hand I will get them a gift card to their fave mexican restaurant. I think they would be happy with that.
