Never did I hitchhike. And never did I pick anyone up. I would phone if I saw someone needing help once I reached my destination, or now a days use the cellphone.
The whole hitching thing was just never for me.

Way back in the 70's it wasnt all that bad. My friend and I would hitch a ride all the way to the Plaza in Riverside (Calif) at lunch, just have fun there, hang out, then right about the time school was almost over, we'd hitch a ride back. These days though, can you imagine a couple of 15 year old girls getting rides from Budweiser truck drivers, laundry service delivery drivers, the Sparkletts water man? J_A_I_L_B_A_I_T!!!
Ive even given rides locally to guys in town, back when everyone knew everyone in town back then, too, but these days its not an option.
I did a little as a high schooler in the Miami area (It was VERY different back in the '70s) As a trucker now, I'd love to pick a rider now and then, but Federal law and company policy prohibit it...
I remember thumbing into town one evening and my father picked me up! I was smoking a cigarette and didn't have permission to do that in those days. Actually, I never got permission. It wasn't the most pleasant ride I ever got...
