Filling in for our friend bjh again today, as his other obligations are keeping him busy this morning.

My happy this morning is that first sip of coffee.

I stumble out to the kitchen, yawning and rubbing my sleepy eyes, and start the coffee grinder up as I fill a pitcher with water. The scent of the coffee beans as they are ground hits my nose, heralding the dawn, and the aroma alone starts to wake me up. Water in the reservoir, fresh-ground coffee in the basket, hit the "start" button, then back to dress for the day, as the coffeemaker starts chuckling to itself.

Twenty minutes later, I'm back in the kitchen assembling lunches while the spouse fries eggs and toasts bread, and we do the morning dance together, dodging around each other in our tiny kitchen making ready for the day, with the scent of the freshly-brewed pot of coffee a steady counterpoint to our work.

And at last all is prepared and it is time to revive myself. The dark, strong coffee fills the cup, steam rising gently to my nose with its promise of warmth, of intense flavors, of another day. A splash of half-n-half, a quick stir, and then the first sip of coffee. I close my eyes as I roll it over my tongue, savoring the notes of chocolate and nuttiness, the slight acidity mellowed by the half-n-half, the richness left in my mouth as I swallow, and all is well again with the day.

So what is your happy today, on this or any other subject?

My happy today is that my parents will be here shortly...to say goodbye before they drive back to Ohio! So I guess it's my sad for today too. We had a great visit and now I can look forward to visiting them in April.

MidwesternBookWorm - That was all I needed. I'm not a coffee drinker, only was for one week back in college, but I just love the smell of fresh brewed coffee. Back when I was working at school and if the coffeepot was low, I'd make a fresh one just to get the smell. People asked me why I kept making coffee, even though I didn't drink it. My reply - "But I work with people who do, and it makes my job so much more pleasant." Thanks again for the wake-up story.

Thanks for starting the thread, mwbw.

Rrtechno, I too like coffee for the aroma, not so much the taste.

I guess a similar happy for me is hot chocolate, but am allergic to milk, so that is a very occasional pleasure.
