Among other things, my thin body. My very first band, joining a theatre group that did plays and performing in a real theatre, my first job, car. And most of all, my first child born!
The 70's were my teenage years. I graduated from high school in 1978 and then my first year of college before the decade ended. I started driving and had some great friends.
Our family moved from Minnesota to California in 1972 when I was 12. It was nice to have a pool for summer days, but I did miss the snow and occasional "White Christmases" we got in MN. However, we got a very rare surprise on one day in January 1976 when it actually did snow in San Jose and that was fun. It was melted away by about 4 in the afternoon as I remember.
As a kid, Shakey's pizza was my favorite in Minnesota and was glad to find out San Jose also had one just a few miles from our home when we arrived in CA in '72.
I still kept my Minnesota pro sports allegiances and it was exciting to see the Vikings go to four Super Bowls even if they did not win.
Trips to the coast were fun in the 70's and the traffic was less back then. Our family enjoyed summer getaways to the Pajaro Dunes vacation rentals on the coast. I remember fun trips to San Francisco and Monterey, too.
Going to high school football games and hanging out with friends was fun. There was a more laid back feel then, too. I watched Star Trek, Brady Bunch and loved the late night "Creature Features" that were on Bay Area TV hosted by Bob Wilkins...usually horror and suspense films along with guest interviews and an occasional dark comedy.
I miss... my parents being younger - that's all, nothing else. You can keep those Pet Rocks, Clackers, bell-bottom jeans, and leisure suits. And why did we think those Lava lamps and water beds were cool ?
My favorite time period by far and I wish I could go back. But I'll take the advancement of all things medical, better cars, and some technology.
Peoples attitudes would rank #1. Sadly many people and society in general have become angrier and more distant. Stepping on your fellow human being happened a lot less back then.
Simpler and better times.
I like the 1970s because it was one very special and UNIQUE time in history:
It was after The Pill and before AIDS. ANYTHING GOES.
