I Pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
The Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America's birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as 'Flag Birthday'
Inspired by these three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

Celebrating the creation and meaning of our Flag.........when I went to school in St. Louis, we always celebrated this day. Remember I gave a tribute to our flag during our 8th grade graduation ceremony. Wonder if the kids still do this or if flag day is even mentioned anymore!?!
Thank you Sunny for this thread!>>>
And, findinghope...Birthday Wishes to your Mom, also.
I was talking to my 16 year old grandson on im a few minutes ago..I said "Happy flag day"..He said "What's that, Mamaw?" I asked him if they ever taught him the history and meaning of the flag..He said, "No, just the pledge in the first grade." So I sent him Sunny's post..He wrote back,"Cool!"
It kind of a ritual treated with at most respect for the flag. The end result will be the stars on outer end in a triangle. It has to be done with two people
If you don’t read any other post you must view this one! How I remember years ago when he was on tv and gave this performance in his show. You’ll know more about the pledge and the words that are contained in it then you ever knew before.
This is a link for the video of Red Skelton’s “Pledge of Allegiance”.

You’re right,,,, I too get tears and chills listening to “each word” as Red says the Pledge of Allegiance. I wonder how many people “miss” the real thoughts and feelings of what the pledge is all about? I listen to it again and again.
