But I did "jump" back the other day when exiting the elevator as the Brazilian maid down the hall almost popped in on me. She expected the elevator to be empty and I did not expect someone had buzzed it up, so we almost collided and were both given a scare. There is a great Portuguese expression for this: pregar um susto/to nail a fright on someone
