A good idea, indeed. A basket with some munchies and perhaps some fresh fruit would be a nice welcome-home gift.

The week before last, I traveled from Italy to home (near Chicago); a very long day. Counting the leg to Zurich first, we were in the air for almost 11 hours and then on a shuttle ride from the airport to the remote parking garage, then a 2.25-hour drive home through Chicago rush-hour traffic. Factor in jet lag from 7 time zones crossed and it was exhausting! When I got home there was nothing in the house to snack on, let alone to have for a meal. A basket of ready edibles would have really hit the spot!

I would appreciate any ideas

I have done weekends for her before, but now I am doing a 2 week sit.
I am staying at her house and she is paying me.

I would like to give her a thank you gift for allowing me to do this job, plus a welcome home gift.
I'm sorry I don't understand why you feel you need to give her a gift.

Hanging wind chimes soft sounding for outside the kitchen window.
Fresh groceries like eggs, bread, bag of salad,

A light but solid meal feels grounding after hours of travel.

OP wants to spread some "happy".

Is it necessary?
Probably not, but it's an extension of kindness.
Something some people are compelled to do,
and is a lovely human quality, plain & simple.

Maybe like a "welcome home" thought.
Maybe a little assurance of getting called upon again.
Something like sending a hand written "thank you" note after being interviewed for a job you want.

Going the extra mile..

Thanks everyone for the wonderful ideas

I am going to make a basket of quiche, fresh fruit, cheeses, bread, butter, nuts, yogurt, and some pecan pie along with a Pets Mart gift certificate.

Gee, I'd like you to house sit for me next time!

Your gift sounds lovely and I'm sure it will be very much appreciated.

My dog would appreciate your services but especially your gifts. Maybe you could get him to eat something twice.... I can't. That's one heck of a spread you mention there. Maybe just maybe.

That's a great idea, airplane food is gross and she probably cleaned out the fridge before she left. That is so kind of you

Oh, i was gonna say a nice outside wall hanging, they have some neat ones at Walmart. Or one of those ornaments you stick in the ground (outdoors) that is solar and lights up in the dark.

Sounds like you already made up your mind, but maybe next time...
