I pondered the thought of which is better, buttons or zippers? Both have problems yet why do we have shirts with buttons and pants or skirts with zippers? Who made these rules and why? If costs was not a factor which do you prefer and why? And then the big question of all time - why are there garments that button left to right and others right to left just because of the sex who will be wearing it?

That comes from a father who knows best... especially when his daughter had her first date...

I know that answer from a high school trivia game--

Why Do Men's and Women's Clothes Have the Buttons on the Opposite Sides?

"The most widely touted theory by far is that the practise of reversing buttons on men’s and women’s clothing stems back to the time of elaborate dress of gentlemen and ladies when upper-class women, particularly during the Victorian era, wore so many layers that it was necessary for them to be dressed by a servant or maid. As such, it became customary to make clothes for women that were slightly easier for other people to button up, specifically right handed people. Men’s clothes were left with the button on the right, as has been common throughout the history of buttoning, because most men tended to dress themselves."

~~

I prefer buttons--they can add more style.

Hooks, snaps and Velcro seem to be a good idea for some items. When everything else fails or has problems I like to use super glue and call it good.

Both have aesthetic pros and cons. Zippers are flat, easy to pull, handy for pants, skirts, dresses, shoes. Some are almost totally concealed. But they fail, and replacement is costly.
Shirts, especially business or formal always look better with buttons. Zips, I can imagine for some sporty outdoor wear. Polo type shirts.

Now, lets answer the Big Question:
Mens’ buttons are on the right side because men have always tended to dress themselves, and most men (and women, for that matter) are right-handed.

Womens’ buttons are on the left side because years ago, the women that could afford fancy clothing with a bunch of buttons would rely on maids to help dress them. So, if a servant is going to routinely buttoning up a shirt/dress for someone else, that servant is going to prefer to have the buttons on their right side (which would be the left side of the garment).

So, it’s simply we’ve done it this way, so we’ll continue to do it that way, really a lack of creativity, although there is something to be said about something that works.

Now you know.
