Besides the drinking part of it, why do people like going to bars?

Not all of us do! I can't stand the smoke and the noise.

For some it's the meat market factor, for others it's just a place to socialize and have a good time.

Good question. I'm only a fan of low-key bars, I like 'em dark, dingy, and not too crowded. I live 20 mins. from a college party town and I can't stand going there, matter of fact I've only been to 2 bars there ever. I like going to bars to get out the house, spend time with my ladies, and listen to a good band every now and then.

so when they go to socialize, is it to meet new people or to hang out with the ones that they already know?

If I go to a bar, it's with close friends. Usually female friends, so we can have a couple of drinks and get a little out of hand.

Other than that, to see live music.

But I dislike traditional "bars" in general. I'd rather go to a nice restaurant with a bar, if I'm meeting gal pals.

Definitely not for a pick-up. That's why "dating sites" and Craigslist exist.

Bars exist so that men can take full advantage of intoxicated women with low self esteem.

I also hate the cigarette smoke that is typically found is bars although more of them have become smoke free in recent years. I actually enjoy hanging out for an evening in a bar especially is there's live music. Also, the possibility of meeting an intoxicated member of the female persuasion is always in the back of my mind.
