When we went which was years ago it was to socialize with friends. The drinking seemed to tapper off and for some of end by the time we reached our late 20’s. The bars than just became places to go laugh at those who still got drunk.
Yeah I never got the whole bar thing at all. I can have more fun doing any number of things, get better food elsewhere, better drink elsewhere, socialize among those with common interests vs. random people while doing hobbies, etc. bars are a monumental waste of time imo. But I understand they serve a function for those seeking random hook-ups.

now i never go to bars it's to tempting to drink to much cruzan rum and hava alla nighta funna..
I am not much of a drinker, but I like to sit in the bar area of the restaurant because its just a little more quaint and relaxed. I am very well known at one in particular for ordering iced tea at the bar, so when I'm there it's like visiting family and friends. Only I pay for the pleasure.

Some people like them, because it's a place to get away from the kids for a while, to socialize with people that live in their neighborhood, and to have fun (if there's live entertainment in their bar).
I have been sober for quite sometime now and rarely ever go out to a bar anymore these days. But when I do, I only play pool or watch a band play and drink my ginger ale. I normally don't stay more than 2 hours these days. And I don't stay out late anymore (I'm normally home by 9). But I only go like 1 time of month or every other month nowadays.
I doubt anyone has had more fun than I have partying through the years. Every now and then I miss it.....but overall, I had a great run and am okay with giving it a rest at this point of my life.
I dont do it often at all, in fact, rarely, but when I do, its with a friend for a drink and sometimes to do karaoke. Thats really the only place you can get a good mixed drink, sometimes a home made one just isnt the same.
Going to a bar doesn't always mean you're going to pick up members of the opposite sex with low self esteem, meet new people (heaven forbid!) or get drunk.
I don't drink but I often join a group of friends at a bar just to socialize, watch a game and relax.
Maybe it's the bar I go to or the people I hang out with that makes the difference.
Oh I've been to the type of bars that have been described but I don't back to them.
