I'd say it is 2nd tier, with some global cachet secondary to being the most visited city in the country (fights with NYC annually for that title).

I never understood how Flights to a city ever gave one (especially New York) the right to claim it's the most visited City in the world.

The NYC Suburban Metro has millions of people living in it. A lot of them are flying to/from college, family, vacation and are going through LGA, EWR and JFK.

Hotel Rooms in use would be a far more accurate measure.

flights to a city? I think you misread my post. I was stating that Orlando FIGHTS with NYC as the most visited city in the country

What I'm trying to imply is that New York often holds that title, but the majority of what they base visitors on is flights into New York's major 3 airports, just as Orlando often basis it's tourism numbers on visitors to MCO.

The thing is, Orlando's airport is far more filled with leisure travelers, Vs. NYC airports are often a hub to get to the suburbs of the area. Orlando's MSA 2.3 Mil vs NYC's 23 Million.

Orlando's actual visitors (those coming to the area for vacation) probably trumps New York far far far more than they express through the figures of flights, which you would see more in Hotel rooms used.

For some reason, i just see Orlando as Disney World, Vacation, Get Away and Tourist Attractions!!! Plain and simple, kinda hard for me to take it seriously or look at it like a typical Major City, i just dont see it...

I'm originally from Miami and have been living here in the Orlando area since the fall of 2005 and not by choice. The question begs "is Orlando" a major city"? I think that begs the question on many different levels.

Public transportation : A: Not there yet even though the metro gets kudos for Sunrail and it needs to be expanded to include Weekend service & longer nightly service. It's quite embarrassing that there will be no Sunrail service on the 4th. of July this weekend into the city.
B: Orlando needs a Light Rail system that covers every thing from the I-Drive area to downtown to areas of east Orange county. Bite the bullet & raise the Sales Tax by 1/2 percent dedicated to funding such a system. This will spur development where fixed rail systems are already in place in other cities.
C: Infrastructure such as having side walks and street lighting. For God sakes can LYNX install covered bus benches to protect riders from having to sit on a bus bench either being baked to death by the Sun or being bathed in a afternoon thunderstorm while standing next to a LYNX bus pole stop!

Sprawl: Orlando / Orange county needs to get a grip on it's horrific low density sprawl. It needs a GRID system that supplies street connectivty instead of Cul-de-Sacs and Walled communities.Orlando needs more walkable neighborhoods & not Six Lane streets when crossing a Semoran Blvd. doesn't mean risking your life! Colonial Drive has to be one of the ugliest roads I have ever seen in this state.

Orlando has made incredible strides with the Dr Phillips PAC & the Soccer stadium since I've been here and I do consider it one of Florida's major cities but it has a very long way to go.Hoping for a brighter future for Orlando.
Peace

Agreed, Colonial/50 and Semoran are some of the ugliest around.

The County's local infrastructure is definitely among the worst in the state. On top of the things you mentioned, no sidewalks or street lighting bordering a good portion of UCF and the areas that students live. It seems insane that Colonial has no street lights on most of its route through the county

Have you been to Orlando? And I mean Orlando -- NOT Disney, AKA Buena Vista.
I highly doubt it

Nope... And im sure Orlando has its parts, just like any City, its a City. Its way more than Disney World but its just hard for it to get past that Image of Being Disney and Taken Seriously as a City, thats all...
