The State of Florida needs to regulate Property Management Companies of Short-Term Rentals. This is the second time that one of these companies has done away with my Security Deposit. I emailed the Attorney General's Office, but there is so much they can do, given the fact that they are NOT REGULATED IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA, therefore, you are at the mercy of whomever wants to steal your security deposit on any short-term rental in the State of Florida.

The first time I rented a house it was in Davenport from a British owner who decided not to reimburse me the security deposit, after the pool pump broke. He was connected to a Clermont-based company, that he owned with others.

The second one is holding me hostage to a broken vacuum cleaner that was broken from the beginning, also in Davenport. You see, it is your word against theirs, and they know that most likely one lives out-of-state, therefore, they know one is limited on how much to do to recover the money.

For me, twice is enough. Back to the Hotels, were I get daily maid service and free breakfast, with no headaches.

So, if you are planning to do a short-term house rental get the name of the property management company, and run it through ripoff.com: The Leading Ripoff Site on the Net and ScamBook.com, before you make the reservation with the Booking Agent. And remember that the Booking Agent can only help you so much. Read this out:

Florida property management: Florida property management unlicensed - Orlando Sentinel

And if it happens to you, contact the Attorney General's Office. Perhaps, once that they continue getting these complaints, they would regulate them. Good-luck.

To take them to Small Claims Court, I would have to travel from New York to Florida, and then wait 2 to 4 months for the case to be seen, or place on a calendar. A waste of money and time. Instead of $300 for the security deposit, it will end costing me, $3,000. They know it is a lost cause.

The best way is to plaster them all over Facebook, RipOff.com, ScamBook.com, and any other company you can come across. List their names, and addresses, and alert people. Also, got to www.City-Data.Com, like I did, and report them there.

In order for a company to get their name off one of these companies above, they have to pay money......

I know taking them to small claims would be based on principal and not actually coming out ahead. The only sites I check for reviews are tripadvisor, yelp and google reviews. I think these are what most people use too, if you haven't done so already, be sure to make reviews on them.

You could also try using VBRO.COM if you want to avoid hotels.

unfortunately it isn't easy for out of state people to do this. I agree with the OP there needs to be regulation but I would also include the HOA's in what needs to be controlled.

Rubies and Miranda are the same person.

No one ripped them off...they paid $3400 for a 6 wk rental...not ONCE did they vacuum the home.

There were two adults and a dog in the home...again, not once did they run the vacuum that was provided. They lost their deposit of $300, (yes, only $300) because they left the home dirty.

I don't think they deserve anything...when you leave a unit dirty, you're going to lose your deposit.

This now the third thread on City Data regarding this. If they can afford $3400 to rental a home, they can afford to sue in Small Claims court. They are just trying to bully this company into handing them their money back.

Are you the landlord lol?

If the OP left the unit in a mess then keeping the deposit is reasonable. There should have been a contract going over the details.

Nope. I'm not in Real Estate.

I didn't post online about how I rented a place, refused to clean it and got upset because they kept my deposit. There was no reason for you to come here and posting anything about this company ( A company you refuse to name because you know they'd come here and discredit your backside for lying)...if you really think you're right..go to court. But, you can't go to court because you don't have a case.
