I am thinking about moving to the Depoe Bay area to retire. Maybe a small home/condo....Thoughts?

How familiar are you with the Oregon coast? Are you moving from somewhere in Oregon and you've visited Depoe Bay frequently?

Depoe Bay is one of my favorite places. It has the feel of a beach town, which you can't say about every town on the coast.

I like Yachats just as well and Yachats isn't quite as crowded with tourists.

It's a very small fishing and tourism town. It's a beautiful place. I'm sure you will like it.

Not really a "beach" town, as in walk-able beaches nearby. Rocky coast. That said, beautiful area. Limited services, though.

I think Depot Bay banned short term vacation rentals about 20 years ago. So it isn't flooded with AIRBnB or VRBO rentals like most of the rest of the Oregon coast. That might be a good thing from the point of view of a retiree looking to settle. But it might be a bad thing if you are only thinking of living there part time and renting the place out the rest of the year.

Something to be aware of one way or the other. I think Depot Bay is the most restrictive town on the entire coast when it comes to short-term rentals. Canon Beach would be second.

The AIRBnB and VRBO websites seems to have quite a few listings for Depoe Bay. If Depoe Bay does have a regulation against it, it seems to be ignored.

Here's an article about Salem but it mentions restrictions in Depoe Bay and a few other coastal cities.

Rise of Airbnb, vacation rental homes met with city of Salem shutdowns

If it were me, I'd certainly do my due dilligence on this topic before buying there.

Even before buying there I'd check out the lay of the land. The residences mostly seem to be built on the upslope hillside/safer tsunami zone area probably.... behind the little shops. Slides and, can-I-get-Homeowner's-Insurance, come to my mind. Love the atmosphere of the little touristy town though.
