The smoke situation can change completely in a couple of hours with any shift in the wind. If you are trying to dodge smoke, you might want to keep an eye on predicted wind direction.
Thanks that's a good idea. I guess wind will have to be the deciding factor in where to view the eclipse. Doing a little more research the smoke I saw when driving west from Salem must have been a flair up of the French Fire outside of Detroit. I'm still really amazed that there was so much smoke, but in the 45 minutes I was driving, it just disappeared, to the point I didn't see any smoke when I reached Detroit. The smoke conditions sure do change very quickly.

Lol, use TripCheck and watch the traffic cams this weekend through the eclipse.

I am staying home and walking to the end of my driveway, watching the 97% eclipse while I spend about a minute saying "oooo!" and then I am going back into the A/C.

As has been said elsewhere, “The difference between a partial eclipse and a total eclipse is like the difference between watching the Super Bowl from inside the stadium or staying out in the parking lot.”

I don't actually care. I particularly don't care enough to deal with that kind of traffic and concomitant stupidity, particularly in "Extreme Danger" fire season.

Is Lady Gaga performing during the period of total eclipse?

Hope you're not relying on pinhole viewing for that?

I actually own a place just north of Newport on the ocean and won't be there for the eclipse. I'm in South Dakota headed east. Place is rented out though.

Now that is excellent. I may have to make a setup.

Great idea. Even if you have glasses you don't want to look at the sun for 2-1/2 hours, just for the final few minutes.

I am aiming my GoPro camera at the sun (it's ok to do, same with smart phone cameras). GoPros have WiFi so I can connect it to one of my tablets and I will watch most of it on that.
