Would this be totally ridiculous? My husband works on the Northside of Camp Pendleton so he would be commuting to the south.

For what it is worth, I would be a grad student and could alter my schedule based on my classes. I would be able to use the HOV lanes because I would be taking my daughter with me so that she could go to daycare on campus.

Commuting Tustin to UCLA. That's heading north on the 5 (or the 405).

seems different than

North side of Camp Pendleton (south Orange County), commuting to the south (towards Camp Pendleton???).

Either way to UCLA from Orange County will be nasty unless it is during off hours, and even that will have nasty places and times.

Check Sigalert.com Los Angeles Traffic Map during your expected commute times.

Yes, my husband would be going south to Camp Pendleton and I would be going north to UCLA. I thought a reasonalbe location between the two would be Tustin.

This never made sense to me, allowing an unlicensed driver as a carpooler.

Do you think that wherever you settle, your child will end up going to school - do you think you'll be there a long time? If so, consider school quality.

School quality is an issue which is why I was looking at that area as opposed to areas that might be more equal in distance. We do have some options to do private schools either closer to where my husband is or up by UCLA

I would also think (but you should verify using the sigalert link) that the traffic will be worse heading towards UCLA in the morning so you might want to increase his drive heading south in the morning in order to reduce your drive heading north. Torrance? Long Beach? Los Alamitos? I guess it depends on how much you can tailor you schedule around traffic.

I live in Culver City, and commute to Huntington Beach down the 405. Traffic going southbound in the morning, and northbound in the evening is not too bad, and my drive usually takes no more than 40 minutes. Traffic going be other way (northbound in the morning, south in the evening) is much worse and I would guess that I'd be looking at at least 1:15 - 1:30 commuting that way. The carpool lane would help, but even that is slow many times.

Hope this helps.

With no traffic, it can be done in 45 mins. With traffic, it's a whole different story.

Thinking more about doing this...maybe the Long Beach area. It would only be temporary.
