Does Laguna Niguel have it's own downtown area or do people just go elsewhere to hang out, shop, eat out, etc.?

Laguna Niguel is the land of master planned (often gated) subdivisions, strip malls, and shopping centers anchored by a big store like a supermarket. You can eat and shop all over the place but to just hang out, you'd go to a mall or some city like Laguna Beach, if you can find parking.

Well, there is the town center area cross of Niguel and Crown Valley, nothing to hang out there. There are a lot of shops on the Crown Valley and Greenfield cross too. I would say the Mission Viejo Mall and the Kaleidoscope there are your best bets.

Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo, Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, Lake Forest and Irvine all lack what the typical All American town has, a traditional "downtown" business district with an assortment of locally owned shops, restaurants and other commercial venues along a "main street" with wide sidewalks. Huntington Beach has the commercial area area near the Pier which is probably one of the most popular places in OC to hang out and people watch.

It has pockets of retail and restaurants. While it's no longer in Laguna Niguel, we used to go down to Monarch Bay Plaza from my house for most things like dry cleaning, haircuts, groceries, banking, hardware, etc. Otherwise would drive up Coast Highway to South Laguna or down to Dana Point.

Don't forget San Juan Capistrano. Technically it is the oldest and most historic downtown in Orange County.

I stand corrected. SJC does have a neat little dowtown and it isn't a beach town.

I think it has more to do with the age of the towns. Laguna, South Laguna, Dana Point, San Juan, and San Clemente were established a much longer time ago than the others that came about during and after the advent of tract neighborhoods, freeways, and malls. Laguna Niguel was first developed in the mid-60's when downtowns were starting to lose their panache.
