Tons of tourist seem to love the place. The times I've driven down there, the traffic and parking nightmares and the rather snooty attitude really put me off. I haven't driven down there for years. There are much nicer, more easily accessible beach cities, IMO. Am I missing something? Is it worth the traffic nightmare?
Absolutely beautiful coastline. People there have $ and lots of it. Highly conservative and yes, the snooty factor is alive and well there. Surprisingly, it has a fairly prominent artsy population within; along with art festivals throughout the year. It does have some of that vapid 'real housewives of OC' vibe to it though.
I've been in LA all my life and I can honestly say that I have never really been down there. It looks really nice though, but I doubt my LA grittyness would fit in down there. =)
I enjoy going down there a couple of times a year as a day trip. To me, Laguna Beach has a very exotic look to it which I find appealing. There's also TONS of art galleries to peruse and the downtown area is very walkable. When I go down there, I usually couple the trip with a stop in San Clemente or Newport Beach.
The only way I'd live in Laguna Beach is if I had money pouring out of my ears. It is a very nice location, but I would feel uncomfortable there at even a high-middle income.
That being said, if you fall in the high income class, it would be one of the most desirable areas to live in in Southern California.
You'd have to be from Berkeley to call Laguna Beach conservative.
Or you "stayed there many years ago for a long, long weekend."
