2 A.M. Bar Time Set For Omaha - Omaha News Story - KETV Omaha (http://www.ketv.com/news/23995592/detail.html - broken link)

I'm glad to see this passed. I was starting to have serious reservations about returning to Omaha due to the overly conservative political climate, but this eases alot of my worries.

I don't have strong feelings either way about this, because I'll never be out in bars at midnight, let alone until 2:00 AM. That's kinda what us old taters do...

But how is this some sort of political or politicized thing?
And how is this new closing time going to be beneficial to anyone?

It's seems like much ado about nothing, to me.

Well it probably doesn't seem like much to you since your a self admitted "old tater" but to people like me and my friends (in our 20's, 30's, and 40's) this is a welcome change. It's not all about being able to drink but being able to stay out and socialize later. When I was in NYC where they close for an hour to clean I noticed there wasn't nearly the amount of binge drinking that I saw here with the earlier closing times. They noticed too since they said they had never seen anyone drink so fast

Even Wyoming has a 2am closing time. Do we really want to have Wyoming having one up on us?

Ummm... Actually I'm still in my 40s.

Anywhoo, I don't really care when the bars close. I guess I hadn't thought that they were the main venue where people hung out and socialized.

They are the main place for socializing... Where else would a person go?

I also don't really feel strongly either way. . Omaha had to do it, because surrounding towns were doing it. It would be dumb not to. People would just leave Omaha and spend money elsewhere. The last thing you want are drunk people trying to switch bars at 1AM.

Second, anyone that is drunk at 2AM was drunk at 1AM. At least most people.

Lastly, there have been times where I've been out until 1AM. . Then on the way home maybe I'd like to stop by the store and pick up something for when I get home. This will allow me to do that now.

Right.

I heard one guy talking about this a couple weeks ago, and he pointed out that Council Bluffs bars stay open until 2:00. As a result, Omaha people were going over there, drinking until 2:00, then driving back into Omaha. Obviously that's not good, and for a lot of reasons.

Well... Restaurants, homes, etc.

My wife & I both get up early for our jobs, so the only time either of us is up at 2:00 AM is to pee and go back to bed.

I will admit that when I was 21 and a drinker we'd leave work at midnight and see how much we could drink in an hour. At 12:55 we'd order another pitcher or two to tide us over for a bit. There were a few times we drove to Council Tuckey to get more before 2 am.

I'm not a drinker anymore, but I will say that I can see how making it a uniform time with Iowa can cut down on the people crossing the river to get a bit more before they close.
