There's lots of good, safe neighborhoods all over the metro. What's right for me, may not be right for you. It all depends on what you are looking for. Buying or renting? House or apartment? Price range? Do schools matter? In what part of town will you be working? Urban or suburban? How much of commute time are you agreeable to? To give an answer that would be helpful to you, we really need more details.

The area basically north of I-40 from Rockwell to Meridian north to about NW 30th street should be avoided.. the very worst around NW 10th from Rockwell to McArthur. Violent crime, robberies almost on a daily basis there.

As far as the safest.. the suburb's which would be an easy commute.. Yukon, Mustang, west and north sides of Edmond and Piedmont. If you insist on OKC.. south of I-240, really south of NW 89th on south are good.

I'm moving to OKC in a few weeks and someone suggested I look up News9.com Crime Tracker. I noticed the crimes are concentrated in the south-east area of OKC. Does anybody know what's going on there?

I really don't like News9 crime tracker for various reasons, but that's just me.

With that in mind no I would not recommend living on the SE side of town, especially near areas around Del City. Further south and east of the AFB are a bit better though.

Can I ask, with your requirements you outlined in your previous posts (near public transit, walkable/bikeable, working at some sort of high end restaurant, etc.) why are you looking on that side of town? Really nothing special out that way. If I were you, stick to the urban core.

I just noticed it on the Crime Tracker. From personal experience, I want to avoid trashy neighborhoods that's all. It's annoying for those of us that work, when "neighbors" don't have a sense of community or respect for those around them; parties, loud "music", etc. I assure you; I know. As far as transportation goes, from what I've researched, I'll be doing a lot of walking/cycling until I get my motorbike (Kawasaki KLR650...anyone selling? anyone?) which is fine. I also know when I get there, I won't be able to get from Will Rogers Airport to the OKC VA Medical Center without flagging down a cab. Again; I'll just suck it up. High-end restaurant, low-end restaurant.......doesn't matter. Just as long it's not a no-end restaurant that I experienced in NYC (cocaine addicted owner that disappears when he's supposed to give us our paychecks). My requirements? For starters, an employer that's not going to ask me if I speak Spanish (I do: I grew up speaking Spanish but refuse to speak it just to make it comfortable for illegals...but that's another topic). Simple really: Work, school, place to practice music, pay bills.

^What?

You will most likely need a car living here. It appears you don't have kids but you did mention school. If you want a place you can bike to downtown, I'd say Deep Deuce area might be to your liking. OKC isn't really urban that many people walk and bike to work.

Trust me (and Zachj7) on this. If you know you will be without transportation for some time, you really want to stick as close to the urban core as possible. I know you say you will just "suck it up" but that is much easier said than done. This is not NYC. At all. OKC is a typical sunbelt city and I would vouch most areas outside the 35/40/44 loop are unwalkable AND have poor public transit. There are plenty of safe affordable options inside this area. What is your price range?

We are just looking out for you. I've seen it time and time again on this board where something is suggested to someone, they say "thanks but no thanks," and then they are on here 3 months later bitching about how much they hate it here. I don't want the same fate to fall on you.

Thanks for looking out for me folks. Price range? Maybe 400-500 for a studio. I do plan on living within the downtown area no matter what. I know walking the Williamsburgh bridge from Brooklyn to Delancey will be
a lot different than walking around in the OKC area but overall, a 30-60 minute walk is no problem for me.
