Hello All, I am planning on moving to Oahu in the second half of 2014 and was wondering if you could give some information on the prices of things. I don't live in the US right now (in Seoul South Korea) and am trying to get a comparison on how to manage expenses (expecting some price shock but maybe not as bad as people from the mainland). I'll go ahead and try to list of the things that I think make a good consumer basket:
At my current situation
Rent: $400/mo for a studio but deposit was $30k
Utilities: $150/mo
Cell Phone unlimited data, 300min voice, including 2-yr device payoff: $45/mo
Broadband Internet: $17/mo
Gas: $8/gallon
New Toyota Camry: $35k
Milk (reg, non-organic): $6/gal
Ground Beef: $14/lbs
Chicken: $1.15/lbs
1 lbs Barilla Pasta: $4
Pasta sauce 16oz jar: $5
Package of 9 Grapefruits: $13
1 lbs strawberries: $9
10 lbs watermelon: $25
Loaf of standard bread: $1.50
1 liter Coca Cola: $2.00
Taxi 1.25mi: $3.00
Bus ride: $1.75~2.50
Cigarettes: $3.00/pack
Domestic Beer 6-pack: $6.50
Renting a beach umbrella for a day at the beach: $20
Samsung 50" LED TV: $1500
If anyone can give the prices of any of these things (or any other 'necessities'), it would be of great help.

I'm gonna grow me some watermelons and sell them for $100 each!
Ground beef is not $10/lb, either. About $4/lb is what we pay.
Good deal on the milk.
Everything else looks about right, I guess, but isn't the internet/cable cost a bit low?

Oops, sorry, I was thinking Steak @$10/lb, not ground beef.
That place had Hawaiiantel TV as part of the condo fees, so the pricing was lower to add on internet and the premium DVR/channels.
I currently just have the basic cable and internet, but still paying the same for the combo of oceanic cable and hawaiiantel internet.
The subject of cost is a moot point unless you factor in your compensation from South Korea (or anywhere else for that matter) versus what you will make in Hawaii (or any destination).

That's a great price for the cable and internet---congrats!

I agree, but it's interesting to see what things cost in different places, just for the fun of it. Some of the costs that the OP from Korea quoted were amazing.
If you know what you will spend, you can then figure out how much you need to make. After you have that figure, then you can start finding out what jobs you can align with that pay that amount. Once you have the #'s ahead of time it's much more cut and dry to figure out if it will work.

I absolutely understand where you're coming from. But I'm telecommuting so the compensation is more or less fixed wherever I go. Would just like to improve the quality of life.
Air quality in my city: 122 [Children, active adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion]
Beijing: 544 [Hazardous Health alert: everyone may experience more serious health effects, lol]
LA: 70 [Moderate Health alert: everyone may experience more serious health effects]
NYC: 34
Honolulu: 24
Kona: 9
Staying on the treadmill and not being able to run outside has not been great and IMO really reduces the quality of life.
Thank you so much to the above posters on the comparable pricing. It really gives me rough idea on what to plan for. And thanks for the expat comparison link.
