I live near Toledo, Ohio, and know there are certain neighborhoods to avoid. Is Hammond the same? We're going to be relocating, and I've found numerous houses we like, but we're not sure which neighborhoods to favor. We have 3 young children. Any suggestions? Thank you so much!!!

Hammond has seen better days and I don't say that lightly. There are some gorgeous homes from yesteryear when Hammond was a lovelier place to live. South Hammond is very nice. Not sure if the schools are getting better. I think most send their kids to Bishop Noll. I have friends who graduated from Clark and Gavit and are doing fine.

Default Hammond schools watch out

Hammond is a geographically fairly large city and there are some very nice areas of Hammond if you can afford them and have ZERO interest in putting your kids into the Hammond school system. The "nice" areas are along the state line in South Hammond, the area around Purdue University Calumet, and...that may be about it. Hammond has indeed seen better days, and drugs and gangs hold sway in many other areas of the city. Unless you like a socio-economic adventure, I would re-consider a move to Hammond, sorry.
