Our membership w/SAMS is expiring in a few days. I am wondering whether we should try Costco? We live close to both shops. Would anyone share the experiences/opinions?

Check out the Frugal Living Forum, there are a whole bunch of posts on this topic.

FWIW, I like Costco better. But that's because the one near me bakes really good bagels. They're both pretty similar.

Costco has better quality merchandise, and I find more things that I want to purchase there as opposed to WalMart with bigger packages, which is how Sam's appears to me.

Costco is a lot better, IMO - more natural foods (not as many as my sister's Costco in Reno, but still), semi-artisinal cheeses, organic meats (if you're an omnivore). Yeah, Sam's has some of these things, but Costco has more (and seems to continue to improve with each of our visits). The Costco produce, at least at the Pentagon City location, is hit-or-miss, though - I've bought a lot of stuff there which is already starting to mold.. not good, when you've just bought 3 lbs. of the item in question. In that regard, the PG County location (in Beltsville) is way superior. Oh, and the cheese pizza at the snack bar is one of my guilty pleasures.

Addendum: Some of the Kirkland signature products are surprisingly impressive, too (a lot of them are rebrands of popular products from manufacturers like Newman's Own, Borghese [cosmetics], etc.). And occasionally they'll have really fantastic self-care products that you'd almost never see for less than retail anywhere else - last weekend, for instance, I snagged a Blisslabs body lotion and shower gel combo for about $16.

Costco wins in my book. The Kirkland brand items are great, and as mentioned earlier Costco offers better quality items than Sams club does.

I also like the Kirkland brand items, both for quality and value. The one exception has been the Kirkland brand liquid dishwasher detergent - it just doesn't get our dishes clean. I buy either Cascade or Finish tabs instead.

I usually shop at the Costco in Fairfax, off of 29. It's a big store with lots of variety.

Has anyone tried the Kirkland brand Champagne/Sparkling wine?

Costco is also known for treating its employees much, much better than the WalMart empire does. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/17/bu...=costco&st=cse

There seem to be more Costcos around than Sam's. I am about equidistant from the Costcos in Leesburg, Sterling, and Chantilly - and I go to all three, depending on other errands and whether or not I need gas (Chantilly doesn't have gas, Sterling's gas is way cheaper than Leesburg's, etc.) I *love* the Kirkland diapers and wipes. I also love the Kirkland equivalent of Zyrtec - about $15 for a year's supply if you take it daily.

The moms I know in McLean and North Arlington shop at CostCo. Not at Sams (they've said on many occasions-"Its too blue collar" but they are monied people) and not at Wegmans (Too far). I just spend $$ on Wegmans line brands, cheap and delicious.
