It was on NPR?!?! Darn, I wanted to keep it my little secret.

Ditto on Marterella. There's another winery essentially across the street that is nice and has amazing views (Mediterranean Cellars). Apparently Marterella and Mediterranean are having a tiff, which the owner of Marterella was happy to tell us about.

I would like to suggest Canaan Valley in WV. It is peaking right now! But that's 3 hours drive!

Manassas Battlefield. A lot of people don't realize it's a really beautiful place to hike in addition to being historic.

Mediterranean is decent as well, I liked the wine cork tables they have. They had that one strange greek pine-flavor wine that turned me off to them a bit; not that the others were bad, that one was just so different.

It's neat to hear that others like going to the VA wineries as well. My family does a lot of winery and camping weekends. The wineries and vineyards offer some of the best views in VA, most of the properties are gorgeous, and you can have fun sampling wines in the process while enjoying the fall scenery.
