I have some time off this month and plan on getting out to take a lot of fall photos. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on places to take these pics. Some nice places I normally wouldn't think of. Skyline Drive is an obvious one but I'm looking for other locations as well. I prefer to stay within an hour of NOVA if possible.

Meadowlark Gardens and Wolftrap National Park.

The road to Tarara Winery used to be lined by brilliant red trees, but it's been years since I've driven there. Here's a shot I took years ago to give an idea, but I think you can get better ones. (Also the trees are probably much bigger now)

Lake Anne in Reston. Also, Waterford, since farms and historic structures look great against the foliage.

If you take photos of Middleburg or Front Royal (or any other town) can you post a few here? I've always wished we had a Middleburg photo tour.

Certainly. Wife works in Middleburg so getting out there is easy.

I second Dolly Sods and Canaan Valley! It is an amazing place! Actually it was snowing 9 inches on the past two days! I got some very nice shot with the leaves and snow! The leaves in Canaan Valley are at its peak right now, I think it will still be quite good this weekend.

Other than that, there are Sky Meadows State park (bit further from Middleburg, close to Paris, VA), Spruce Knob and Seneca Rock in WV, George Washington National Forest (this is a big area), Blueridge Parkwak, Crabtree falls, Wintergreen and etc.

If you haven't done the Old Rag Mountain Hike (5-7 hours circuit hike), I highly recommend doing it the last weekend of October or the first weekend of November. There are a lot of chances for foliage photos and beautiful view of the Piedmont valley.

For something closer, I would go to anywhere along GW parkway, Dumbarton Oaks garden and that walk around the neighborhood (around mid November is the great time), Brookside garden, Great Falls, Rockcreek park and etc..

Have fun! I honestly think that October-November-December is the best time to be in DC area!

Closer to home, a drive along the GW Parkway works fine for me. The view across the Potomac from Mount Vernon when the trees are at peak color is spectacular.
