I am a young professional looking at two job options- one in Chantilly and one in DC. The position in Chantilly would be higher paying but the location of the DC job is ideal. If I were to take the Chantilly job, I was wondering where would be a good place to live. I would want to live within walking distance to a Metro station (I currently do not have a car and want easy access to DC night life) and also not have to have too long of a commute. I was looking near the Fairfax/Vienna Metro station but it seems like Fairfax is more family-oriented. I would prefer to live somewhere on the Orange line in Arlington but would the commute be too long? I'm used to a very short commute where I live now so the longest commute I would want would be 45 minutes (<30 minutes is ideal).
Any advice would be great!

It would be extremely difficult to live in Chantilly without a car and regularly get to the Orange line, unless you plan on taking the bus.

I'll echo that sentiment. Five years from now you'd be able to live in Reston Town Center and walk to the Silver Line for a relatively hassle-free ride to DC for nightlife/culture or drive down to Chantilly to work in about a half-hour, but sadly (as I've been beating like a dead horse with my complaints falling upon deaf ears) this Metrorail line STILL hasn't been built.

I know there are places to live near the Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Metrorail station of the Orange Line, but be advised that I-66 can be pretty unpredictable for commuting purposes. You'd be heading westbound (against traffic) to work in Chantilly, but since there are so few east/west commuting routes in that particular area just one accident can make you a couple of hours late for work. Personally I never understood why the Orange Line wasn't extended out to Centreville and why the proposed Silver Line isn't being extended to Leesburg, as these two improvements would at least partially ease commuting woes in the area, but then again what do I know?

Welcome in advance to Northern Virginia, but I'm sorry to say your options will be pretty limited if you want to live in a great Metro-accessible area with a nice commute to Chantilly.
