Are there any decent places in McLean to take kids out for ice cream? We moved here earlier this year. We are generally happy with the move but it does not seem nearly as child-oriented as Falls Church or Vienna. There are lots of gourmet places but it seems to lack any place like Nielsen's in Vienna or even a Baskin-Robbins.

There was an (expensive) ice cream place called Moorenko's in downtown McLean for a few years, but it recently closed. Depending upon where in McLean you live, the Baskin-Robbins in Arlington (Harrison Street shopping center at corner of Harrison Street and Lee Highway, around the corner from Yorktown HS), might be close by.

I don't know what part of McLean you live in, and I haven't lived there for a few years, but here's what I can tell you. If you go to the Giant shopping center in Falls Church (Haycock Road and Route 7) there is a Baskin Robbins in that shopping center. That's no mroe than 5-10 minutes from anywhere in McLean.

Also, if you head over to Merrifield, there's a shopping center on the Gallows Road/Lee Highway intersection. There used to be a Carvel there, but I don't know if it exists anymore.

Further into Falls Church, intersection of Broad Street (Route 7) and West Street, near the 7-11, there is apparently a place called Lazy Sundae, which has moved in since I left. The reviews I read say that the ice cream is homemade and really good, but the staff is apathetic. Your call.

Edit* Sorry for the bump, I didn't notice how old this was when I replied.

Moorenko has been replaced by Sweet Leaf which has pretty good ice cream.

they sell moorenko's ice cream at Listrani's. Sweet leaf is good too. Greenbriar's was doing frozen/tart yogurt last summer but not sure if they still are. If you go over to Arlington (Westover) there is Toby's Homemade.
