Yeah, I don't think it would be a very successful business having hours split among men and women especially when salons typically cater more heavily to women anyways. The solution for this has been posted...just hire a stylist to come to your home and do your hair.

Living in a particular country does not mean that you abandon your own culture and completely adopt that of the place you are living. You can have a respect for different cultures. That seems very ethnocentric to assume that a person living in America should "get over" their own cultural perspective. That comment was offensive, insensitive and, frankly, ignorant.

I would call a mosque and ask--they probably keep lists of businesses run by their members and many Muslim women prefer women-only salons.

Offensive? Well, everyone has their perspective. Insensitive? Hey, you're now in *my* country which has a perfectly wonderful culture of it's own. If you don't like it, I'm sure there is a whole country full of people who feel like you do and share your cultural values.

Ignorant? Hardly. My wife is an immigrant who came here as an adult from a semi-Western country and has adjusted wonderfully.

when i was growing up women went to hairdressers and men went to barber shops.

The "coed" places were exceptional, and advertised as "unisex salons". So this ain't exactly a cultural phenomenon that goes back to 1776.

Same with me. I grew up seeing only male barbers ("Joe" and "Eddie") wearing white smocks. Typically they were closed on Mondays due to being open on Saturdays. The red, white, and blue pole was spinning outside the shop. Just the way it was. I think I was about 14 before a woman ever cut my hair and it was at the time an 'unusual' experience. I remember at a young age getting warm lather but on the back of my neck as he did a clean cut on the hair there. There were leather strops hanging where the straight edge razors were sharpened immediately prior to use.

Grandma, mom, and women used "beauty salons" where men were loath to set foot in.

Moderator Cut: Off-topic to the thread and Northern Virginia in general.
