Wow great info.

That has been something I have been wrestling with actually. Having a system installed and not monitored so as not to worry about the 3 year contract, but paying I'd imagine, a considerable amount up front, or going with the monitored.

I ,too have heard awful things about ADT since I've started researching so I've taken them off of my list. Brinks has been at the top of my list as I've heard mostly good things about them. I think I'm going to look at Vector also.

I guess I'm leaning towards the monitored mainly because I'd have no idea about where to begin installing one on my own. Brinks has a $50 installation special running so I'm thinking of going with that.

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to respond, I really appreciate it.

Please keep the opinions coming!

Man, a local ADT certified company is HOUNDING our new neighborhood. They drop off 3 or 4 salesman to go door-to-door, often as late as 7 and 8pm...drives me crazy. They keep coming back multiple times, and have no idea what each other are doing.

I think I just need to buy some ADT (or other company) signs and stickers off Ebay, in an attempt that they will see the signs and skip my house. Then again, I better use ADT signs, otherwise they might still knock and try and "convert" me to their security religion.

Or maybe I just need one of those "Protected by Smith & Wesson" stickers.

You probably have one of those stickers on your car that says "Caution, Driver only carries $20 worth of ammunition"

Just trying to think of ways to keep those ADT salesmen away.

You probably have one of those "Obama for Change" stickers.

I think your best defense is always going to be to have a strong community support network at your fingertips. When I move into my new home next month I'm going to make it a priority to befriend as many neighbors as I possibly can not only to be friendly but also to earn their trust so they'd be more inclined to keep an eye out for suspicious activities when I'm not around (and vice-versa). If people start to notice my regular routine (i.e. running at 6 AM, leaving for work at 7:30 AM, coming home at 4:30 PM, leaving for the gym at 5 PM, coming back in at 6:15 PM, etc.), then they'll be more apt to know something is up if they see someone coming in and out of my unit at a different time.

I'm not trying to say one ought to "take advantage" of your neighbors. However, the more tight-knit you attempt to make your neighborhood, the less likely a burglar will be to make off with your goods without drawing attention.
