I need to commute from Herndon to Rockville twice a week. I need to arrive in Rockville by 9am. I am trying to decide if I should brave the pain and suffering that is the Beltway at that time, or if I should go out of my way to White's Ferry, and come back down into Rockville from there.
Does anyone know the approximate commute time for this?

I guess it's really a toss up.

I'd take the toll 267-to 495 to 270.
270 shouldn't be that bad since most traffic will be heading south.
45-60minutes??) If you leave at 7:45 I bet it's closer to 40-45minutes.

To take Whites ferry puts you way out of your way...a good 20+ minutes up to Leesburg to the ferry. (15 minutes if you tkae 267 the toll rd) Then If you miss the ferry (only one runs) you may have to sit for 15-20 minutes for it to run and unload and return...Ferry ride is about 15 minutes but closer to 20 by the time you load unload etc...) then you have to take Whites ferry rd to 117 at Dawsonville both 2 lane country roads (and if you get behind a slow mover...) From 28 it's smooth sailing to Rockville (about 20minutes) It will get congested on 28 near 270 etc...

So...If all goes Perfect Whites Ferry will take you just under 1 hour.

It used to take me 30-40 minutes from my house in Leesburg to my sis in law in Gaithersburg.

Sometime the Ferry runs smooth and there are no back-ups etc... but some days it backs up gets boggd down or...is delayed due to debris in the water....alot of unknown varibles.

I'm about to start commuting between Herndon and Rockville, and I think the way to go is to cut through Great Falls - i.e., take the Georgetown Pike and jump on 495 right before the American Legion Bridge. Then you've got smooth sailing all the way to Rockville against the flow of traffic.
