I always thought the times were from 6PM-8PM. They actually used to publish times in the paper and that was in various places I've lived.

People start in my neighborhood around 6:30pm. I think 5:00pm is too early because many people aren't home from work yet.

My extensive research indicate that the optimum time is 6:30pm. Earlier and you'll find people not yet home. Any later and they're eating dinner! Try to ToT in neighborhoods with townhouses for the best CPH (candy per hour) ratio, but skip the houses with stairs! Stay save and have fun.

I have a TH with 3 steps to my front door. I hope the little ghosts and gobblins aren't skipping my house. I have tier 1 candy!

I think after 6pm or you will miss people who are not home yet.

In our neighborhood it seems like almost everyone just waits until it gets dark. There are a few with very little ones that come earlier. We have had older kids coming up until 9:00. 31st it is!

We lights out 8:30-9-ish - anytime prior and we're ready to serve up some candy!

Lights on? Come on down!

Light out? Get lost!

I was going to ask if people still do the neighborhood thing. I live in a townhouse neighborhood, but it's pretty isolated, in the fact that it's off a busy main road, and there are no sidewalks of paths connecting it to other neighborhoods through the woods or anything. Combined with my wife's humbug nature towards this particular day (lights off, etc.) and we haven't had a single trick or treater in the seven years we've lived here.

However, my daughter is 3.5 now and I want to dress her up in one of her princess outfits and take her out. My wife seems to think the thing to do is (I think this was normal for her growing up) go to a church parking lot or a big place like the mall where they have large setups, and take the kids around those. I say to heck with that, trick or treating is supposed to be a neighborhood activity! Please tell me it isn't dying off, and she won't be disappointed if I get her jazzed up about this.
